
Ormond was born in Epsom, Surrey, the daughter of Josephine, a laboratory technician and John Ormond, a stockbroker. She is the fifth of five children to her parents. Her first performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady attracted attention. She then attended Cranleigh School and Guildford High School. After a year in art school, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, where she graduated in 1988. Ormond first appeared in British television in the 1989 show Traffik, about the illegal heroin trade that flows from the far East into the streets of Europe. Ormond was the heroin addict daughter of the main character, a Home Office minister who was involved in fighting heroin importation. The first role he played earned rave reviews.
